Overwhelmed

BIBLE READING: 1 Timothy 5: 16 - 18 16 If a woman who is a believer has relatives who are widows, she must take care of them and not put the responsibility on the church. Then the church can care for the widows who are truly alone. 17 Elders who do their work well should be respected and paid well, especially those who work hard at both preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, "You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain." And in another place, "Those who work deserve their pay!"

What does this passage mean to you today?

BLOG: Life has a way of overwhelming us. Anything from earthquakes to bathroom scales can push us over the edge.

Some followers of Jesus think that something has gone wrong if life is overwhelming them. That either God doesn't love them or they did something to deserve this. I've heard people misquote 1 Cor 10:13. They say something like, "The Bible says that nothing will overcome me."

Well, 1 Corinthians 10:13 says No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Big difference.

Moses was overwhelmed when the Jew turned against him.
David was overwhelmed when his family was kidnapped.
Jesus was overwhelmed in the Garden of Gethsemane.

What do you do?

Pay attention to what is essential. Many things are clamoring for your attention that you don't need to give any to. Media and salespeople go to great lengths to get you to pay attention to them. Don't.

Keep the faith. Being overwhelmed has nothing to do with a lack of faith. You will need your faith to face tough situations. God gives you the faith you need to do just that. Pray for it.

Use wisdom. Wisdom doesn't ignore your emotions, but it doesn't allow your feelings to make your best decisions. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the wisdom you need.

Managing Skills. I see people suffer needlessly because they fail to manage two things, money and time. Learn all you can to be as effective as you can be in these two areas, and you will decrease your stress significantly.

PRAY: Dear Jesus, I am overwhelmed, and I need you today. AMEN
