What Is Your Purpose?
I’ve asked people this question before. I’ll get answers like, “Make a million dollars.” Or, “Raise my children well”.
These are not purposes, they are goals. When I point out the difference between the two and press the question I usually get the proverbial deer in the headlight look.
What is a purpose? One definition says, “Your life purpose consists of the central motivating aims of your life—the reasons you get up in the morning.”
“A goal is a desired result or possible outcome that a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve: a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development.”
When you focus on goals, even if they are worthy, and fail to understand your purpose it will cause you to lose the meaning of life. The wife and mother who gives everything for her family but is unfulfilled or the husband who works to be a great provider but doesn’t know why.
Ps 57:2 I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.
