When Judas Betrays You

Easter is coming in a few short weeks, and at that time we will recall the story of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection.

This story includes a disciple named Judas.  He was the one who betrayed Jesus.  Even though all he did was direct the Chief Priests to the place where they could arrest Jesus in private and identify who Jesus was with a kiss on the cheek, his was an act of betrayal.

Have you ever been betrayed?  I have.  More times than I care to remember.  Each time it was a person who I considered to be a friend.  Someone who ate my food and enjoyed my hospitality.  Someone who I had made sacrifices for on their behalf.  Someone who I had invested my life into for the purpose of helping them build a better life for them and their family.  Each time the betrayal was painful, expensive and unnecessary.

I wish I could tell you details, I know that it would add credibility to what I am saying here, but it would probably cause more problems that the story is worth.

It took me some time to get over their actions, but I am glad to say that I did.  I have even come to the place where I appreciate some of the things that they did.  God was able, through these trials, to do things that made me a better person, leader, and pastor.

1 Peter 3:9  Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

When betrayed, talk to God first.  God's wisdom in this matter is greater than yours.  God also has your best interests in mind.  Revenge is a selfish motive that will only hurt you in the long run.

WWJD  What did Jesus do after being betrayed my Judas?  He didn't lash out in anger.  He had been betrayed.  No amount of anger or violence was ever going to change that.

Forgive  This is hard and it takes practice.  Forgiveness never justifies what the other person did to you.  Forgiveness releases you from the emotions that would cause you to self-destruct.

Count the Cost  Which is more valuable to you.  Your relationship with God or getting even?

PRAY  Dear Jesus, I need to move on from the people who have betrayed me.  I don't want to live in the past anymore.  AMEN.
