New Leaders and New Vision - Joshua Leadership Principles

Okay!  Let's look at a common problem that people like me face all the time.   You know that you are the leader, but people do not follow you any more.  The old vision isn't getting the job done.  So you come out with a new vision.  But the people whom you are leading don't buy into it.  They are still following an old vision that you know isn't going to get the job done.  You've got a BIG problem.  What are your options.

#1 - Leave.  Let a new leader bring the new vision.  Now on the face of this it might not be a bad plan and I'm not saying that this might not happen.  But there are few things that you can never resign and move on from.  Marriage and parenting for example.  Leaving isn't and will never be an option.  Sometimes as a pastor or CEO you might be tempted to go somewhere else.  But the fact of the matter is, you can't!  No, I don't mean that you can't physically move - you just know that it is the wrong thing to do.

10, even 20 years ago - the leave and go somewhere else, option was popular.  Once a leader had run out of ideas, they would just moved on and enjoyed some bliss for the next few years.  Times have changed and the life span of a good idea isn't years or even months.  It's weeks and days.  I don't think that you or I can move every few weeks.

#2 - Die.  In 2 Cor. 5:17 it says,  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.  Now this passage is about the powerful effects that salvation in Christ will have on you.  My question is, why can't Jesus make a new leader out of me?  What can't He change me to be the new leader of the new vision?  He can.  But I don't think that the process that brings this new leader to a reality is going to be as easy.  New ways of thinking and seeing life will be required in order to lead in a new vision.  The old leader has to die - and everyone has to sit up and take notice!

#3 - Reinvent.  For a long time I thought that I needed to reinvent myself in order to be relevant to my culture and my church.  BIG MISTAKE.  Mark 2:22   And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, he pours new wine into newwineskins.”  Manipulating facts doesn't change anything.  It just makes it look different.  Grouchy is still grouchy whether you are in jeans or in a suit.

#4 - Surrender.  To be a new leader you have to do something that will not agree with you.  You have to give up and surrender everything about yourself.  That which you don't surrender will never be changed.  That isn't to say that everything that you surrender will be changed.  It is to say that Christ will change what needs to be changed.  The goal?   To make you into the new leader you need to be.
