Gideons 300 and Your Midianites

Tim Keller in his book, COUNTERFEIT GODS defines 'Idolatry' as...anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart & imagination more than God; anything you seek to give you what only God can give.  A counterfeit god (idol) is anything so central and essential to your life, that should you lose it, your life would feel hardly worth living.

So what are the idols that you are fighting today? Don’t say that you don’t have any, that’s not possible. Everyday is a new opportunity to be tempted. That is why Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:13 to pray that we would not be lead into temptation, and delivered from Satan and his evil minions.

What is in your life today, if you were to lose it, would make life hardly worth living? I have to tell you that I have lived long enough to see people make their careers, drugs, personality quirks, money, their status, their spouse and family and so much more an idol.

Oh but Pastor, God wouldn’t take “those” things away from me. I’m sure that the Israelites were saying the same thing. Yet there were the Midianites stealing their crops, their vineyards, their live stock and pretty much anything they wanted.

Here is what I would like for you to think about. Are there “Midianites” in your life, stealing what rightfully belongs to you? I’m not talking about your wants, but your needs. The Midianites were not only stealing the Israelites crops and livestock, they were taking their sense of security and self value. The book of Judges tells us that they were hiding in the hills and in caves. That really doesn’t really instill confidence does it?

I see Christians, who have faith in Jesus but don’t learn how to live their life as an act of worship unto God, suffer needlessly. Are you?
