Christmas Doubt

This usually happens a few times during Christmas.  Someone will walk up to me and say, "Don't you think that all this commercialism of Christmas has ruined it?"  To which I say, "Yes" and "No."

The following usually happens a few times during Christmas.  Someone will walk up to me and say, "Don't you think that all this commercialism of Christmas has ruined it?"  To which I say, "Yes" and "No."

Here is my explanation.

YES - Christmas is a very profitable time of the year for many merchants.  Up to 25% of their income occurs between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve.  So it doesn't surprise me that marketers go all out to get our dollars during the Holidays.  Can we get so caught up in the shopping and celebration that we can forget why this time of year even exists?  Sure we can.  But that is on us, not the merchants.

Proverbs 25:28 says  "A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls."  Or another way to put it is.  "Someone who doesn't exercise self-control during the holidays will be broke come January."  OK, I might have taken a little literary license there, but you get the idea.

"Wow Pastor, you are some Scrooge!"  No, I'm not.  Let me prove it.

NO - Christmas is a wonderful time of the year to tell people about Jesus.  It is an excellent time to share the joy with other people!  Our Savior, Jesus was born!  A gift from God that when properly claimed results in the forgiveness of our sins.  The imagery from our Christmas carols, icons, and traditions all point to one thing.  Jesus!  Why should we celebrated!  His arrival meant we were saved from a life ruled by sin and an eternity in hell.

Luke 2: 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

If angels can celebrate the birth of our King - so can we!

THE BIG IDEA:  Celebrate Christmas and don't get caught up in the holidays.

Sunday, Dec. 4th at 10:30 am I will start a new series of messages entitled.  "Joy To The World!"  This week, "Joy For Your Family!"  Life Groups start at 9:15 am for everyone ages 0 - 100.
